Culture Studies
Culture in Montessori has a very wide connotation. It encompasses nature as understood and classified by man, and also everything man-made – geography, zoology, botany, physical science, music, painting, sports, to name some. In Montessori, the child is introduced to the above aspects of human culture through related practical life, sensorial and language activities. The child is introduced to a variety of art and handwork, sporting, and music and movement activities. The child also gets to discover some fundamental physical properties by performing scientific experiments. The child is given first-hand exposure to botany in the school garden. The intention is not to overwhelm the child with facts or for the child to memorize the same. But the objective is to introduce to the child and offer her some keys to each of these areas of human culture, thereby kindling the child’s innate curiosity for her to further explore and discover the world around her.
